In 2017, Sue Biely of Inside Green, approached me to help write content and instruct an educational pilot project for the Surry School Board. We delivered 8 lectures over a 4 week period to two elementary classes (grade 1/2 split and grade 6/7 split). The emphasis of the curriculum was to engage, connect, explore plants and introduce the concepts of stewardship and legacy. We incorporated techniques like lectures on the ground to break desk style learning, supplied plants to touch and smell, had the children touch the soil with their hands and discussed how website community can visualize legacy for plants. Each of our lectures was followed by an art class where the children could observe respond and draw the plants based on their experiences. I shot and produced this short to help seek funding for the program.
